Engaging in Discussions

Discussions is a communication tool that may be used in your Brightspace class. An instructor adds a forum or topic and conversations are grouped in discussion threadsThread posts can be saved, viewed by the rest of the class and may even be graded by your instructor.

To start a new thread:

  • Click Discussions from the Course Activities menu in the top navigation bar.
  • To post your own thread click on Start a New Thread, give your thread a title, type your message in the text editor box, scroll down and click the Post button.
  • To read threads from other students, click on the thread title.
  • To respond to thread from other students, click on the blue Reply to Thread button, type your response in the text editor box, scroll down and click the Post button.

To reply to an existing thread:

  • Click on Discussions from the Course Activities menu from the course navigation barYour instructor may also provide a discussion link in the course content.
  • Click on the title of the discussion topic you want to review.
  • From the list of existing threads, click on the title of the thread you would like to reply to.
  • Once you're in the thread page, click on the blue Reply to Thread button.
  • A text box will appear to compose a reply. Enter text, images or other content. You may also be asked to upload a document file or create and video or audio response.
  • Once your reply is complete, click on the blue Post button.

Discussions FAQs

Why can't I see my thread in a discussion board? 

  • When you have completed a thread posting, be sure to click Post so that your instructor and other students can view it.

Can I edit my post?

  • Instructors control the setting that allows students to edit their posts. Contact your instructor if you would like to edit a post and do not see the option to do so.
