Webex Student Guide

Webex is a video conferencing platform that connects students and instructors in a virtual environment.

WebEx Set-up

Equipment Requirements for Webex:

Depending on the type of "meeting" you'll be joining, the equipment described below will allow for the best experience during a Webex session. It's possible that your instructor may only require audio conferencing and not video.

Using WebEx on a Mobile Device

Joining a Webex meeting from a mobile device:

To get started, download the Cisco Webex Meetings app and install it on your device. The app is available for iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets.

  • Click on the link provided by your instructor in Blackboard or open an invitation email, then select "Join meeting".    
  • When asked to open in "Webex" select "Open."
  • If asked about terms and services, select "I Accept."

  • Enter your name and an email address.

             

  • When asked if Webex has permission to use your microphone and camera, select "OK."
  • You may need to un-mute your microphone and enable camera. You can do so by clicking on the microphone and camera icons.

             

  • You can also choose how you would like connect to audio by selecting the "Audio Connection" dropdown menu.

  • Then tap "Join" to enter the meeting.

                    

Using WebEx on a Laptop or Desktop Computer

Joining a Webex meeting from Windows or Mac:

  • Click on the Webex meeting link provided by your instructor. This link will be available via Blackboard or in the form of an email invitation.
  • If prompted, click on "Save file" from browser pop-up.  

  • Alternatively, you can choose to cancel the download and click on the "Join from your browser" link.
  • You will be prompted to enter your name and an email address. Click "Next."

  • Select "Join meeting"

  • To enable audio and video capabilities, click on the microphone and camera icons.

  • Once you're in the meeting "room," you can click on the chat icon to expand the chat window.

Background Options

Change your background before a meeting starts: 

  • Click Change background and select the option of your choice. 

  • To blur your background, simply click on the Blur option.

  • To use a different virtual background, click on any from the options provided.

  • To use your own image for the virtual background, tap the + icon and look for an image file that is already saved on your device.

  • Webex recommends that you use an image that's 1280 × 720 pixels in size or larger. Images must be in the .jpg or .png format.

Change your background during a meeting:

  • To change your background once a meeting is in progress, click on the video settings icon that looks like a circle with three dots.
  • To blur your background, simply click on the Blur option.

  • To use a different virtual background, click on any from the options provided.

  • To use your own image for the virtual background, tap the + icon and look for an image file that is already saved on your device.

  • Webex recommends that you use an image that's 1280 × 720 pixels in size or larger. Images must be in the .jpg or .png format.

  • Once you've made your selection, click Apply and meeting attendees will now see your virtual background.

  • Webex will retain your background selection for your next meeting.
