  Respondus LockDown Browser is an online test proctoring tool available in some Brightspace courses.

Introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser

Check to make sure your system is ready.

Operating Systems:

  • Windows 10 and higher
  • MacOS 11 and higher
  • ChromeOS

Browser:

  • Google Chrome version 132 and higher

Internet Speed:

  • 1.5 Mbps download, 750 Kbps upload
  • Speed test  (click on this link from the device you wish to use)

College-Loaned Laptops

Follow the steps below to install Respondus LockDown Browser on a laptop you borrowed from the College:

  • Search for and open the Software Center app from the start menu.

  • Click on Respondus LockDown Browser from the Applications menu and click install. If the LockDown app doesn't appear under the list of applications, call the Student Technology Help Desk so we can grant you access.

  • Once installed, head back to the exam page within Brightspace and click on the blue Launch LockDown Browser button.

  • LockDown Browser will open and prompt you to close anything that is prohibited during the exam. 
  • Provide a password, if required, and click Start Quiz whenever you're ready.

Getting Started

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser that prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. 

After you've entered the exam page within your Brightspace course, complete the following steps to launch the Respondus LockDown Browser for the first time:

  • From the test requirements page within Brightspace, click on the link to download and install the latest version of LockDown Browser available for Madison College. Click on the yellow Download button to start the installation. Note: on campus computers and virtual desktops already have the LockDown browser installed.

  • Once the browser is installed, you may need to go back to the exam page within Brightspace and click on the Launch LockDown Browser button.

  • LockDown Browser will open and will prompt you to close anything that is prohibited during the exam.

  • Once open, you'll see a browser tab for Brightspace. This will likely be the only browser you'll be allowed to have open. Your test should automatically open.
  • Check your Brightspace course for more information regarding quiz requirements and restrictions. Contact your instructor with any questions.  
  • Provide a password, if required, and click Start Quiz whenever you're ready.
