In addition to the links on this page to help you find information for your Neighborhood/Community Survey Assignment, don't overlook the importance of personal contacts.  Particularly in smaller communities, talk to the local government officials (e.g. alderman), police chief, school principal, clergy, public librarian, etc. Public libraries often have a pamphlet file of local information and history.
