Practicum Program: Home

Learn about graduate level practicum opportunities at Madison College.

Madison College partners with the UW Madison iSchool as a practicum placement location.  The objective of the practicum requirement is to provide students with the opportunity to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind they have learned in the classroom in a real-world work setting. The skills acquired during a Madison College practicum experience translate to excellent resume builders and interview talking points.

Some specific skills enjoyed by past practicum students include:

  • Co-teaching and shadowing information literacy instruction sessions for first and second year English and communications students
  • Collaborative instruction planning with Madison College Librarians
  • Presenting online citation, plagiarism, and information literacy workshops
  • Staffing circulation and reference desk for the diverse student body of Madison Area Technical College.
  • Conduct one on one reference appointments through our "book a librarian" service
  • Provide primary technology support for an array of technology topics for all students of the Madison College district
  • Monitor and provide online chat reference.
  • Learn and modify Libguides websites with the most current website standards
  • Oversee and supervise student employees
  • Meet with individual librarians to learn about their unique skill set, such as reference, cataloging, and collection development
  • Participate in professional development webinars and online courses
  • Participate in internal library teams to continuously improve upon our current servicesLogos for UW Information School and Madison College Libraries

Since I have stepped into the role of Public Services Librarian, the following UW Madison iSchool graduate students have successfully completed the graduate program at Madison College:
