NOTE: The 9th ed of the MLA Handbook came out in April 2021, but as of September 2021 many sites have not updated information from the 8th ed yet. The main difference in the 9th from the 8th is the inclusion of more examples and explanations. There are not any major formatting changes.

Some common features of MLA style formatted papers include:

  • Times New Roman font
  • 12-point size text
  • One inch margins
  • Title of paper centered
  • Header with last name and page number in upper right
  • Double spaced 
  • In-text citations
  • Italics used for titles of works
  • Works Cited page at the end: 
    • alphabetical order by author's last name (or title if author unknown)
    • hanging indents
