Librarian-led Information Literacy Help:
- In-person information literacy session in the library or health sciences computer lab to demonstrate searching CINAHL and 'beyond' CINAHL, using additional, evidence based sources
- Librarians demonstrate how to identify and limit searches for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Secondary EBM Literature)
Learning Outcomes:
- Students will discover web sources for EBM, secondary literature on the web
- Students will use search limiters to target the most relevant literature on a health topic
- Students will apply the findings of systematic reviews or meta-analysis to clinical practice
Related RN Program Outcomes:
- Compare mechanisms of achieving quality patient care through evidence based practice (Nursing Management and Professional Concepts)
*Library information literacy instruction is most effective when given in the context of a course assignment.*
Assignment Ideas:
- Locate a systematic review article related to a 'National Patient Safety Goal', using CINAHL and other web-based databases, such as Cochrane Reviews, PubMed, National Guideline Clearinghouse, and TRIP. Students are required to filter results, based upon MeSH terminology
- Students compare findings of an article reporting on a 'Randomized Control Trial' vs. a 'Sytematic Review' that addresses the same health topic
- Address PICO questions using systematic reviews and/or meta analysis from the above sources
