Be sure to carefully read and follow any directions from your instructor. Instructors control which tools and features will be used in their Blackboard classes and set the assignment requirements.

Some instructors use the Assignment tool in Blackboard. Generally, to submit an assignment using the Assignments tool in Blackboard:

  1. Click the assignment title.
  2. Review the instructions, including rubrics (if used).
  3. Download, save and rename any files provided by your instructor. Save to a permanent storage location (i.e. H drive, your personal computer, USB drive).
  4. Complete the assignment. The content editor box can be used to type and format text, add files, images, links, multimedia and more. If your response is in a separate file, click “Browse My Computer”. Locate and select the file you want to add.  If you have more than one file to submit, make sure you do so at the same time.
  5. You may add comments to your instructor in the Comments box.
  6. Click “Submit”. When you finish your assignment, you must click “Submit” in order for your instructor to receive your completed assignment. Wait for the confirmation success message.
  7. Your instructor can read, comment, and evaluate submitted assignments through the Gradebook.

  • Follow any instructions that your instructor provided, including how you should name your file.
  • Be sure to wait for the assignment submission confirmation before moving to another webpage, or closing your browser or computer.
  • Use acceptable file formats.
  • If you are having problems adding a file: try renaming the file. Don't use special characters such as ?, !, #, /, %,: * or \ . Don't use symbols or blank spaces in the filename. Use only letters and numbers in the document name.
  • Keep the filename short - less than 32 characters.
  • Attaching really large files, over 250 MB at one time, may cause issues.

SafeAssign Tool - helps students avoid plagiarism and learn to attribute sources

SafeAssign error message: "Sorry, we do not think you are logged in to SafeAssign. Your session may have timed out. If you have received this message in error, please contact your system administrator." If you get this error and you are logged into Blackboard, it is probably because the security/privacy settings on your web browser are set up to not allow 3rd party cookies. You should set your web browser to allow 3rd party cookies, then submit the assignment.

Working with Groups

Your instructor may set up groups within Blackboard.

Blackboard Downtime - 6:00 to 7:00 AM CST every weekday.  Do not use Blackboard during this maintenance window.

FAQ: Why can't my instructor find my assignment

The Assignment tool has both "Save" and a "Submit" buttons. "Save" means that you plan to continue to work on the assignment. Your instructor cannot see your assignment until you click "Submit". When you have completed an assignment, be sure to click "Submit" so that your instructor receives the assignment.
