Academic Technology Launchpad: Assignments in Blackboard

Quick Guide to computer and academic technology resources for students.

Be sure to carefully read and follow any directions from your instructor. Instructors control which tools and features will be used in their Blackboard classes and set the assignment requirements.

Some instructors use the Assignment tool in Blackboard. Generally, to submit an assignment using the Assignments tool in Blackboard:

  1. Click the assignment title.
  2. Review the instructions, including rubrics (if used).
  3. Download, save and rename any files provided by your instructor. Save to a permanent storage location (i.e. H drive, your personal computer, USB drive).
  4. Complete the assignment. The content editor box can be used to type and format text, add files, images, links, multimedia and more. If your response is in a separate file, click “Browse My Computer”. Locate and select the file you want to add.  If you have more than one file to submit, make sure you do so at the same time.
  5. You may add comments to your instructor in the Comments box.
  6. Click “Submit”. When you finish your assignment, you must click “Submit” in order for your instructor to receive your completed assignment. Wait for the confirmation success message.
  7. Your instructor can read, comment, and evaluate submitted assignments through the Gradebook.

Tips:

  • Follow any instructions that your instructor provided, including how you should name your file.
  • Be sure to wait for the assignment submission confirmation before moving to another webpage, or closing your browser or computer.
  • Use acceptable file formats.
  • If you are having problems adding a file: try renaming the file. Don't use special characters such as ?, !, #, /, %,: * or \ . Don't use symbols or blank spaces in the filename. Use only letters and numbers in the document name.
  • Keep the filename short - less than 32 characters.
  • Attaching really large files, over 250 MB at one time, may cause issues.

  • Copy the text by using keyboard shortcuts or mouse action.
  • Paste the text to Notepad
  • Select the text in Notepad, copy the text using keyboard shortcuts or mouse action
  • Using keyboard shortcuts only, paste the text into the new Blackboard location

Workaround 2: Some content areas in Blackboard include a Remove Formatting button.

  • Highlight the text you want to copy in your Word file, then copy it (CTRL + C).
  • Go to Blackboard, then to the place you wish to paste your text, place your cursor in the box and paste (CTRL + V).
  • Once your text is in the text editor space, highlight everything by pressing (CTRL + A) to select all
  • Then use the “Remove Formatting” option in the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) tools. You can find it on the right side of the top row of icons.
