Nursing - Faculty Guide to Nursing Info Lit: Step One

Health Information in a Professional Context

Librarian-led Information Literacy Help:

  • In-person library session in the library or health sciences computer lab for traditional classes; Online tutorial orientation to Madison College Libraries for hybrid or online sections
  • Session involves demonstrations and suggestions for searching the web for health information, how to evaluate web sources for health information, and how to access books, videos, and/or articles in library databases or other skills in consultation with faculty
  • Research Guide to assist student discovery and reinforce information literacy sessions. Includes a guide for APA citations
  • Optional follow-up session with the librarian to discuss student evaluation of the literature choices they made

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students can evaluate and choose superior sources of health information
  • Students can research and interpret health information in a culturally competent manner
  • Students can articulate why their ability to evaluate information literacy matters

Relevant RN Program Outcomes:

  • Assess health of individuals, families, and groups within the context of the community.
  • Adapt nursing practice to meet the needs of diverse clients in a variety of settings (Nursing Fundamentals: Core competencies)

*Library information literacy instruction is most effective when given in the context of a course assignment.*

Assignment Ideas:

  • Determine how care might need to be adapted to apply to a particular population of patients, using authoritative, culturally competent source material and accurate health information
  • Discover three sources on a particular health topic and compare them for coverage, authority, purpose, currency, and how they might inform care decisions for nursing staff
  • Address one of several health scenarios in which students are asked to share accurate, authoritative health information with a patient, patient's family, a neighbor, or friend
  • Compare how web sites, nursing trade publications, and popular periodicals explain new research on health or healthcare topics

Student Communication

Emails from Madison College RN students to a librarian:

I have looked on numerous sites and I can't find much information on.... What is the best way to check tunneling of a wound? I have found a few things, but not much that will help with a 10 minute presentation... If you could leave me in a good direction I would appreciate it. Thanks  -Name withheld, nursing student

My name is (name withheld) and I am in my first semester of Nursing classes. As you may remember, we have to do an assignment based off of evidence located on-line. I have been searching for awhile now and I am in dire needs of your help if possible. My topic is 'whether or not a local anesthetic is needed prior to starting an IV'. Whatever knowledge you are will to pass my way will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I am having a hard time finding articles for my question which is Why not to aspirate with IM injection. I was hopping(sic) you could give me some ideas on maybe key words to put in the search box. that would help or any ideas you have at all would be great. (164 program?)

I am a 1st semester ADN student and our class attended your brief evidence based practice tutorial a couple weeks ago. I am having trouble locating sources for my topic which is, "what is more effective in preventing blood clots: sequential compression devices (SCDs) or TED stockings?" Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Also, do you have any information on writing in APA Format? Our instructor said the library's site may have some resources on this.

I am trying to find some articles for a paper I have to do and all the websites want me to log into the site. How do I do that or do I let you know what articles I want? Thanks  -Name Withheld
