What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing refers to using online, third party companies to host content created, maintained, and, in some cases, paid for by the consumers, businesses, and organizations that use it. Typically, users just refer to cloud computing as "storing things on the cloud." Popular examples include:

  • Google Drive- Using Google to facilitate the creation of various types of documents and to provide access to those documents, rather than using Microsoft Word/Powerpoint/Excel/Etc. on one's own computer.
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Using Zotero's citation manager to create and store a list of citations for your dissertation.
  • Storing photos online at Flickr or Smugmug.

Many cloud computing operations have free and for fee, premium features or applications.
